Chatham Area Transit is the provider of public transportation in the Savannah, Georgia metropolitan area. The Authority was founded in 1986 after the collapse of previous transit providers. Services operate 7 days a week and 90% of county residents are within reasonable walking distance of a bus route.

Jim's Comments:

All CAT fixed route vehicles contain features and equipment that allow riders with disabilities to board, ride, and get out of vehicles easily and comfortably. NOTE: As of May 2016 The River Street streetcars (separate entity from the Savannah Trolley system) are out of service. As a side note, the phone operators for CAT are not well versed in mobility and are unable to address disabled mobility services.

CAT Freedom is a program from Chatham Area Transit that helps increase mobility options for the citizens of Chatham County and removes the barriers that prevent riders from moving freely within the County.

Jim's Comments:

The CAT Freedom program is really geared to local residents and requires you to sign up in advance. However CAT purchased three wheelchair-accessible vans and leased them to Yellow Cab in a partnership arrangement. See details on Yellow Cab below.

Savannah Yellow Cab is partnered with CAT Freedom and the City of Savannah to offer ADA compliant wheelchair accessible taxi vans.

Jim's Comments:

I spoke with Kim the Yellow Cab manager in 2016 and she stated there were a couple accessible vans that were available for airport or regular city operations. She suggested calling a gentleman who's name is Atlas at 912-412-8705. He schedules the van directly. Fares from the airport to downtown are $30-$35, but I'd suggest calling in advance as the availability of accessible vans is limited.

Jim's Comments:

Accessible van rentals are a bit expensive and cost $100-$150 per day plus mileage. Many charge an additional $50-$90 for airport delivery and pick-up services. Some rental companies will not add hand controls or provide transfer/swivel seats, preferring to rent to able bodied persons who drive persons confined to wheelchairs.

Savannah Yellow Cab is partnered with CAT Freedom and the City of Savannah to offer ADA compliant wheelchair accessible taxi vans.

Jim's Comments:

Amtrak is essentially owned and operated by the U.S. Government. It is very aware of ADA regulations and is quite accommodating of wheelchairs. Seating for wheelchairs is limited so call in advance and inform Amtrak of any special needs. Seating is on the lower level on specific railway cars equipped with fully ADA compliant restrooms.

  • Certain cars are also equipped for overnight wheelchair passenger sleeping. There is a small separate room which includes an accessible bathroom.
  • All trains are accessible from the loading platform by a removable ramp which the conductor puts in place for wheelchair passengers.
  • Dining and lounge areas are on the second level and are not generally accessible. Conductors, however, are available to bring food and beverages to passengers requiring assistance.
