Alice Waters’ acclaimed flagship downstairs & cafe upstairs offer seasonal fare & a chic, cozy vibe. In 1971, Alice Waters and a small band of friends founded a neighborhood bistro called Chez Panisse. It was named for Honoré Panisse, the most generous and life-loving character in Marcel Pagnol’s 1930’s film trilogy about waterfront life in Marseille.

Wheelchair Accessibility Comments

• Fabulous French restaurant, very pricey and very wheelchair accessible.
• We had a marvelous dinner here with friends in February 2017. A real memory.
• Although there are several steps at the entrance, there is a long ramp with mild grade along the side. You’ll enter through the kitchen and be escorted to your table.
• There are several accessible tables but also areas that might be a be more difficult.
• WARNING: The upstairs Café is not accessible as there is a flight of stairs. However the restaurant will serve the Cafe menu to you upon request is you are unable to get up the stairs.
• The downstairs restroom is very large, accessible and there’s a push button automatic door opener.
• The Maitre was terrific in guiding me into the restaurants in the pouring rain, and later called an Uber when we needed transport back to the hotel.
• WARNING: this is one of the most popular restaurants in the S.F Bay area and early reservations are critical. They only take reservations one month in advance, and you need to call exactly one month prior.
