El Chorro was originally built in 1934 as the Judson School for Girls and in 1937 it was converted to a restaurant and lodge. Clark Gable, John Wayne, Barry Goldwater and other prominent figures visited the Lodge in its early days. Guests of the nearby Camelback Inn frequently followed the special desert path between the two establishments to enjoy El Chorros noted Classroom Bar.
