Metro buses can accommodate all types of wheelchairs, including three-wheel scooter-chairs, power chairs and small four-wheel chairs. The general requirement is that it must fit on the lift and be able to maneuver to the wheelchair securement area.

Specifically, lifts, ramps and securement areas on Metro buses can accommodate mobility devices up to 30 inches wide and 48 inches long. An attendant may accompany the wheelchair passenger on the lift providing the combined weight does not exceed 600 pounds.

All Metro Rail lines are accessible to persons in wheelchairs. Every station has either a walkway/ramp or elevator from the street level to the boarding platforms. In the event the elevator at the station where you want to board is out of order, you may take a bus to the next station free of charge.

Metrolink is governed by the Southern California Regional Rail Authority (SCRRA), a joint powers authority that was formed in 1991 and comprises five county agencies that were tasked with reducing highway congestion and improving mobility throughout all of Southern California. Metrolink has grown tremendously during our 19 years in service, expanding from three service lines, 11 stations and 2,300 daily passengers to seven service lines, 55 stations and 40,000 daily passengers, all over a 512 route-mile network.
Amtrak, one of our major contractors, supplies the train and engine crews who operate our trains.

Metrolink trains and facilities are fully accessible to persons with disabilities. Each train car is equipped with an accessible restroom and water fountain. Personal Care Attendants are fare-exempt when riding with the person who needs their assistance. Service animals are welcome.

Amtrak is essentially owned and operated by the U.S. Government. It is very aware of ADA regulations and is quite accommodating of wheelchairs. Seating for wheelchairs is limited so call in advance and inform Amtrak of any special needs. Seating is on the lower level on specific railway cars equipped with fully ADA compliant restrooms. Los Angeles Union Station is the main railway station in Los Angeles, California and the largest railroad passenger terminal in the Western United States.

  • Certain cars are also equipped for overnight wheelchair passenger sleeping. There is a small separate room which includes an accessible bathroom.
  • All trains are accessible from the loading platform by a removable ramp which the conductor puts in place for wheelchair passengers.
  • Dining and lounge areas are on the second level and are not generally accessible. Conductors, however, are available to bring food and beverages to passengers requiring assistance.

Accessible Van Rentals

Jim's Comments:

Accessible van rentals are expensive and cost $100-$150 per day plus mileage. Many charge an additional $50-$90 for delivery and pick-up services. Some rental companies will not add hand controls or provide transfer/swivel seats, preferring to rent to able bodied persons who drive persons confined to wheelchairs.
