WARNING: The Amtrak train DOES NOT run through Las Vegas. The Las Vegas Amtrak station is located at the Las Vegas McCarran International Airport at the International terminal on level 1, however, it is only a bus terminal. The nearest train station I believe is in Kingman, AZ. The Las Vegas bus terminal is a curbside facility with no cover or attendant. Wheelchair accessible restrooms are located within the airport terminal. An accessible metro bus is available for transportation into the city.

Amtrak is essentially owned and operated by the U.S. Government. It is very aware of ADA regulations and is quite accommodating of wheelchairs. Seating for wheelchairs is limited so call in advance and inform Amtrak of any special needs. Seating is on the lower level on specific railway cars equipped with fully ADA compliant restrooms.

  • Certain cars are also equipped for overnight wheelchair passenger sleeping. There is a small separate room which includes an accessible bathroom.
  • All trains are accessible from the loading platform by a removable ramp which the conductor puts in place for wheelchair passengers.
  • Dining and lounge areas are on the second level and are not generally accessible. Conductors, however, are available to bring food and beverages to passengers requiring assistance.

Kabit  Book Online

Jim's Comments:

By law all Nevada taxi companies must have wheelchair-accessible vans. There are several wheelchair accessible taxi companies that seek your business. Frias Transportation Management stated to me they are the largest, managing 5 separate taxi companies. Reservations can be difficult and just calling for an accessible taxi can take 45 minutes so be patient or use the Tram.

Recommendation: The newest and perhaps best option is to book an accessible van online. Kabit represents 2,400 taxis in the Las Vegas area and our travel partner Tapooz Travel recommends them. From McCarran Airport to hotels on the Strip in an accessible van costs about $45. So give them a try https://www.kabit.vegas/

Jim's Comments:

There Trams conveniently connect several individual casinos. I used these extensively on my visit. Each has an elevator to the Tram station (they can be a bit difficult to find, crowded and hot in the summer). Each Tram is fully wheelchair accessible and free. One tram runs between the Excalibur, the Luxor and Mandalay Bay hotels. The southbound tram runs only from the Excalibur to Mandalay Bay, but the northbound tram starts at Mandalay Bay, stops at Luxor and ends at the Excalibur.

There is another Tram service between the Mirage and Treasure Island Hotel.

The City Center Tram is a three stations free tram with stops at Monte Carlo, Crystals retail and entertainment district (closest to ARIA) and Bellagio/Vdara Hotel & Spa.

Jim's Comments:

The Deuce is the name of the double-decker bus line serving Las Vegas operated by RTC Transit. The Strip route features a double-decker bus nicknamed The Deuce and run 24 hours a day, seven days a week. These buses went into service on October 27, 2005. Originally The Deuce meant four things: (1) the bus was double decked, (2) the price was $2 one way, (3) the route connected the two primary gaming areas: Las Vegas Strip and Downtown Las Vegas, (4) the first double deckers bought in 2005 primarily for the service started with "2". Currently the double decker buses also serve other local routes, and the price is no longer $2. However, the name The Deuce on the Strip is used by RTC to emphasize that the route refers to just the tourist route.

The Monorail is total wheelchair accessible although there is a fare. A single ride is $5 and you can purchase 1 to 7 day passes costing up to $55. There are multiple stations including several casinos and the convention center. There are multiple stations throughout the Las Vegas area.

Jim's Comments:

Although these are totally wheelchair accessible, they are more costly. I found the Trams convenient and free.

ParaTransit and Accessibility

The Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada (RTC) transit fleet consists of 42 routes. In 2011, RTC Transit carried nearly 58 million passengers in the greater Las Vegas Valley. RTC Transit consists of 31 general market routes, The Deuce, Strip & Downtown Express, Centennial Express, Westcliff Airport Express, Boulder Highway Express, Henderson & Downtown Express, and the Sahara Express.

The Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada’s (RTC’s) Paratransit Service is a shared-ride, door-to-door program available for those who are functionally unable to independently use the RTC’s fixed-route system either all of the time, temporarily or under certain circumstances. All Paratransit customers are eligible and encouraged to use fixed- route services. Paratransit ID card holders can ride any fixed route or express route free of charge.

Jim's Comments:

All metro buses are wheelchair friendly and provide ramps and accessibility. Fares can be purchase at kiosks or exact change. Drivers cannot make change.

Accessible Van Rentals

Jim's Comments:

Accessible van rentals are expensive and cost $100-$150 per day plus mileage. Many charge an additional $50-$90 for delivery and pick-up services. Some rental companies will not add hand controls or provide transfer/swivel seats, preferring to rent to able bodied persons who drive persons confined to wheelchairs.
