Metro is a non-profit, tax-funded public service of the Southwest Ohio Regional Transit Authority (SORTA), providing about 16 million rides per year in the Greater Cincinnati area. Metro is Southwest Ohio's fixed-route bus service. Providing about 16 million rides per year, Metro brings approximately 20% of downtown Cincinnati's workforce into the city. Metro service operates 365 days a year and serves Hamilton County residents, as well as providing commuter routes from Clermont, Warren and Butler counties into Cincinnati. Metro operates 348 buses that drive about 11 million miles per year. Metro also owns 44 Access paratransit vehicles.

Jim's Comments:

The Metro fleet has low-floor buses that provide easier wheelchair access and feature ramps allowing for faster and easier wheelchair boarding. Metro’s standard bus fleet is also equipped with features to make riding easier for people with disabilities. Newer buses feature an automatic voice system to announce key stops, transfer points and other important information. Also, all of our buses are equipped with a wheelchair lift or ramp and two securement areas for wheelchairs.

Jim's Comments:

Amtrak is essentially owned and operated by the U.S. Government. It is very aware of ADA regulations and is quite accommodating of wheelchairs. Seating for wheelchairs is limited so call in advance and inform Amtrak of any special needs. Seating is on the lower level on specific railway cars equipped with fully ADA compliant restrooms.

  • Certain cars are also equipped for overnight wheelchair passenger sleeping. There is a small separate room which includes an accessible bathroom.
  • All trains are accessible from the loading platform by a removable ramp which the conductor puts in place for wheelchair passengers.
  • Dining and lounge areas are on the second level and are not generally accessible. Conductors, however, are available to bring food and beverages to passengers requiring assistance.

Accessible Van Rentals

Jim's Comments:

Accessible van rentals are relatively expensive costing $100-$150 per day plus mileage. Many charge an additional $50-$90 for airport delivery and pick-up services. Some rental companies will not add hand controls or provide transfer/swivel seats, preferring to rent to able bodied persons who drive persons confined to wheelchairs.

Jim's Comments:

Interestingly I could not find a single taxi company worth mentioning, however, both Uber and Lyft are attempting to provide accessible cabs in Cincinnati. Please let me know if it actually works.
