The Auckland War Memorial Museum (or simply the Auckland Museum) is one of New Zealand’s most important museums and war memorials. Its collections concentrate on New Zealand history (and especially the history of the Auckland Region), natural history, as well as military history.

The museum is also one of the most iconic Auckland buildings, constructed in the neo-classicist style, and sitting on a grassed plinth (the remains of a dormant volcano) in the Auckland Domain, a large public park close to downtown Auckland.

Jim’s Accessibility Comments:

Wonderful historical and cultural museum located in the central suburb of Grafton in what’s called the Auckland Domain (Auckland’s oldest park) and it is exceptionally wheelchair accessible. It’s just a short taxi ride from downtown Auckland and when you drive in here (and you’ll need to drive) there are several handicapped parking spaces and a well designed ramp that takes you straight into the museum, no steps.

Excellent Maori cultural exhibits including live Maori performances, which are wheelchair accessible. This museum is far more than just the Auckland War Memorial Museum. And there are well designed ramps and elevators throughout this large museum. Large wheelchair accessible restrooms. There’s also a nice semi-self service restaurant which is very accessible.

As a side note if you’re at the museum you might also want to visit the Auckland Domain Wintergarden which is located  in this Auckland Domain.

In my opinion it’s the best overall museum in New Zealand, certainly my favorite, and it’s all exceptionally wheelchair friendly. We really enjoyed the day!
